New York, NY (Revised, June 27, 2018) – Nederlands Dans Theater 2 will kick off its 2019 U.S. tour with a program of four works at New York City Center, running January 16 – 19, 2019. The program has been revised and will now feature: A New York premiere and a repertoire favorite by house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, and American premieres by associate choreographer Marco Goecke andEdward Clug.
Sad Case (1998) was created when Sol León was seven months pregnant with their daughter and acts as one of the main pillars of León & Lightfoot’s oeuvre. Surprising, playful and earthly movements set to Mexican mambo music show a continual search for the tension between satirical and classic moments.
mutual comfort (2015), an American premiere choreographed by Edward Clug, is a detailed and sharply defined work. The four dancers’ bodies flick and jerk so extremely and frequently that it can be interpreted as punctuation; a certain acknowledgment of the beat. Clug emphasizes personal experiences that arises from the process of creation, led by illuminating human contradictions and surprising moments of beauty and spontaneous irony.
SH-BOOM! (1994), a New York premiere choreographed by Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, marked the beginning of the choreographic duo’s successful, long-term collaboration. The work combines humor with irony and expresses how people from different backgrounds conduct and relate to one another. Inspired by Francisco de Goya’s satirical black & white sketches, SH-BOOM! masterfully intertwines the dark side (irony) and the light side (humor).
